This house is a distinctive and intact example of Craftsman – Arts & Crafts style design and was certainly derived from a popular planbook source; the character and condition of the interior is not known. It is located in Woodland Addition to Salmon Bay City, which was plated by Robert D. McFadden in February 1887 and was one of the earliest platted and developed residential areas in Fremont and was constructed in 1919 during the later period of historic residential development in the district. On June 21, 1919, a building permit was issued to Hans Grevstad to “Build Cottage” measuring 34’ x 37’ at this address for an estimated cost of $4,200. [There appears to have been an older one-story frame house already on a portion of Lot 9 at the time of construction.] Hans Grevstad was identified on the subject permit as the owner, builder and architect; however, the house plan appears to have been obtained from an architectural planbook source. It is virtually the same plan as other houses that were built by Grevstad at 726 N. 47th St. (1918), 806 N. 46th St. (1917), 802 N. 46th St. (1917). Mr. Grevstad appears to have been a very successful Norwegian-born carpenter and building contractor who is believed to have settled in Seattle with his wife Josefine c.1904. He is known to have resided at 901 N. 48th St., 723 N. 48th St. and 6529 Palatine Ave. N. (houses that he may have also designed/built) and to have constructed several other houses in the district including a very distinctive Tudor Revival style residence at 4614-16 Linden Avenue N. built in 1924, where he also lived briefly. King County tax records indicate that the subject house was custom built for Charles M. Neth and his wife Viola who owned the land parcel at the time the permit was issued. Mr. Neth was an established local butcher; he and his family resided in a rental unit at 6015 Palatine Ave. N. prior to owning this house. The Neth family appears to have retained ownership of this property until c.1962.

| Located mid-block on the south side of N. 50th St. with façade oriented to the north. 1-1/2 story, wood-frame, single family residence. Measures approx. 30’ x 42’ w/ concrete foundation and partial basement. Side gable form with wide projecting clipped front-gable entry porch at west side of facade. Distinguished by distinctive Craftsman style features: low roof pitch, low side-gable roof form, wide accentuated roof overhangs, roof brackets, prominent 8’ x 18’ off-set entry porch w/ large tapered porch columns, and double-pattern shingle siding at gable ends. Prominent gable-end returns indicative of popular Colonial Revival style influences during this era. Prominent clipped gable dormer located at east end of main roof gable. Original horizontal cedar siding at first floor level. Original and/or matching double-hung and casement Craftsman-style wooden windows including distinctive multi-pane upper sash members. Ornate transom lite at wide windows within porch. Some new picture windows may have been installed. The original porch columns and stoop exhibited a variegated brick treatment; the brick has been painted. Design of this house appears to be from an architectural planbook source. |
