Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1903

Significance
This is a example of Queen Anne architecture. The structure exhibits a high degree of design integrity.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

This structure was surveyed for the City by Marilyn Sullivan in 1991 (see separate database entry). According to Sullivan, this house was designed by architect Gilbert S. Underwood.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, it appears the structure was owned by Tom Ferraro from at least 1922 until it was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937.

Appearance
This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete; foundation, over a full basement.

The rectangular (nearly square) plan is capped by a gable roof with moderate to extensive overhangs and enclosed soffits. The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne architecture. The use of relatively wide overhangs with modillions gives the structure a slight Italianate flavor.

This house was built in 1903 according to the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report. A previous surveyor has indicated that the house was built in 1900; however, the basis for this assertion is not recorded. According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1928; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated.

The terrace garage and associated concrete entry stairs and metal stair railings have existed in their present state at least since the property was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937. The basement may have been remodeled. The garage door has been replaced. Several of the original windows have been replaced by aluminum units. A wood railing has been added at the edge of the deck atop the terrace garage. The siding may have been refurbished but appears original.
