This is a fairly typical example of Queen Anne -- Free Classic architecture. The structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by minor alterations to the entry porch.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

| Appearance |
This is a two story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a full basement. The irregular plan is capped by a hip roof with an intersecting, front-facing gables featuring moderate overhangs and enclosed soffits.
The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne architecture. The four sided, partial height built-up Tuscan columns (with exaggerated entasis) at the entry porch, the porch entablature, and the deep frieze below the main roof identify this structure as an example of Queen Anne -- Free Classic design.
This house was built in 1904 according to the King County Property Record Card; however, the King County GIS Center Property Report indicates the structure was completed in 1905. According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1927; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated. Although the Property Record Card indicates the structure has a full basement, and although there appear to be basement windows, the GIS Center Property Report takes no notice of this fact.
The fairly large single story extension at the rear appears to be an early addition (it was in place when the Assessor surveyed the structure in 1937). Storm windows have been added at several off the window openings. The porch entry stairs have been altered and their solid side rails removed. The original empaneled vertical board siding at the solid porch rails has been replaced with clapboard siding.
Based on the King County GIS Center Property Report, it appears a modest single story dwelling, identified by the Assessor at the site in 1937 (addressed as 1422-1/2 21st Avenue) is still extant. This structure was apparently built in 1910 and renovated in 1993 but was not noticed by the present surveyor and its position relative to the main house and its condition were not determined.
