Significance
This is an example of early Craftsman detailing applied to an American Foursquare design with residual elements of Queen Anne work at the windows and doors. The structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by alterations.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

Appearance
The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne design. The cutaway bay at the street elevation is also a typical Queen Anne feature. However, the shallow roof slope and the exposed rafter tails identify the structure as an early example of Craftsman inspired foursquare architecture.

This house was built in 1905 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report.

An extension at the rear may been an early addition. The house was clad with asbestos shakes for several years beginning in the late 1950s but has since been returned to its original appearance. There have been some repairs to the siding and the porch details have undergone some minor modifications.
