Summary for 986 20TH AVE / Parcel ID 7228501611 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1900

Significance
This is an example of Queen Anne spindlework detailing applied to a vernacular house form combining elements of early bungalow design with the pyramidal version of the national folk housing typologies popular throughout the country in the last half of the nineteenth century. The structure’s integrity has been compromised by the replacement of most of the windows and a fairly recent expansion of the early addition at the back of the house.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

Appearance
This house was built in 1900 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report. According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1923; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated.

A shed roofed extension at the rear appears to be a significant expansion of an early addition. Most of the original windows have been replaced with metal units. The windows at the addition appear to be new. The cladding of the addition appears to be new as well.

Although the house appeared to be clad with clapboard siding when surveyed in 2008, photographs of the structure made in 1937 and 2008 suggest that the cladding may in fact be drop siding.
