Historic Name: Common Name: Style: Queen Anne, Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area Built By: Year Built: 1900   Significance This is an example of a side-gabled vernacular structure with details adopted from a variety of Queen Anne design approaches and from early twentieth century architecture. The structure’s design integrity has been compromised by early additions and by the replacement and/or relocation of several windows. This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district. A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property. The wide cottage windows that originally characterized the front elevation were typical of late Queen Anne design but their horizontal emphasis  is also suggestive of Prairie style designs. The extensive overhangs at the front of the house suggest Prairie style work; however, the flush, shingle clad gables at the side elevations are more typical of Single style work. The Tuscan column and porch railing at the entry porch and the wide frieze at the first story eave are indicative of Queen Anne -- Free Classic work. This house was built in 1900 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report. According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1918; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated. There appear to be several addition at the rear of the structure (a single story extension existed in 1937; a second floor has been added above the extension since that date). The asymmetrically placed, front facing dormer may be an early addition. Several of the original windows have been replaced with new units of more modern configuration. Some window openings may have been moved.
