Historic Name: Common Name: Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area Built By: Year Built: 1899   Significance This is an example of transitional design where some Queen Anne detailing and a Queen Anne roof configuration have been mixed with elements that seem to anticipate early Craftsman bungalow architecture. The structure could also be viewed as a front-gabled vernacular structure with modified footprint and applied detailing. The structure's integrity has been compromised by changes to the entry porch and replacement of most of the windows. This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district. A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property. This roof configuration is suggestive of Queen Anne design, though the Craftsman style muntin pattern in the upper sash of the cottage window that originally characterized the front elevation, and the stepped sidewalls of the original entry stairs gave the structure a Craftsman bungalow flavor. The turned post at the porch is typical of Queen Anne cottage architecture. The distinctive cottage window that originally characterized the front of the structure has been removed and replaced with a larger three part window grouping of dissimilar function and appearance. Most of the other windows have been replaced with aluminum units. A "greenhouse" bay has replaced a larger window at the back end of the west elevation. The siding has been altered to accommodate the window changes. The entry stair sidewalls have been altered and stair rails have been added. The brick chimney has been removed.
