This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property. It appears the house was owned by Ada L. Carey when it was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937. Gilbert A. Walton acquired the property in 1951. Mark A. and Aimee A. Matson bought the house from Arthur D. and Erville Wheeler in January 2007, and then sold it the following November.
A sales brochure that was circulated when the house was offered for sale again in the summer of 2008 indicated that the house had once been owned by some of the founding members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church (it also suggested that Jimi Hendrix had lived in the house for three years and that it was known to Hendrix as the "Rich Wheeler Home"). These assertion have not been independently confirmed.

| Appearance |
The moderate roof slope, exposed rafter tails and banded windows of the house as it was originally built are typical features of the Craftsman style. Th layered hip roofs and horizontal emphasis in the design are more typical of the Prairie style. The upper sashes of several of the original windows had Queen Anne style muntin patterns, and the suggestion of a truncated octagonal tower at the southeast corner of the structure appears to be another residual Queen Anne element.
This house was built in 1905 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report. According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1921; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated.
According to the King County GIS Center Property Report, the house was remodeled again in 2008. The extent of the work completed at that time is not precisely known.
A sales brochure circulated in 2008 suggests the the floor area of the house has been increased. The entry porch appears to have been enclosed and a new entry stair added at the southwest corner. The projecting single story element on the view (east) side of the house is an early addition that has recently been remodeled. A multi-level deck has been added at the southeast corner of the house. The west facing roof deck (above and behind the enclosed porch) may not be original. All of the original windows have been replaced with vinyl or aluminum units featuring false Craftsman style sticking in their upper sashes. The original single windows at the upper level have been replaced by combination units consisting of one large and two small windows. The siding has been patched and modified to suit the requirements of the recent remodel. The soffits have been altered and the rafter tails that were visible in 1937 have been hidden behind new facias and gutters. The chimney appears to have been removed.
