Historic Name: Common Name: Style: Queen Anne - Cottage, Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area Built By: Year Built: 1903   Significance This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property. BIBLIOGRAPHY King County GIS Center Property Report (http://www5.kingcounty.gov/kcgisreports/property_report.aspx; accessed September 10, 2008) King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives   Appearance The structure was initially a vernacular building (gable-front-and-wing family, national folk housing) with extensions at the north (side) and south (back) elevations. A wrap-around porch with turned wood posts capped by a shallow hip roof, several tall double-hung windows with Queen Anne casing details, and the half glazed entry door gave the original structure a Queen Anne -- Cottage style flavor. This house was built in 1903 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report. The King County GIS Center Property Report records that the house was remodeled in 1989; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated. A significant portion of the original wrap-around porch extending along the west side elevation has been removed, leaving a simple shed roof porch at he north (front) elevation. A fairly large shed-roofed porch at the north end of the structure was enclosed after 1937 but appears to have been removed at some point since 1960. The original post & pier foundation has been replaced by a concrete block foundation that made possible the addition of a half basement. Most of the windows have been replaced with aluminum units. The sizes of some of the window openings have been altered. Roof windows have been added at the east elevation. The entry door has been replaced. The cladding has undergone several changes. The structure was originally clad with drop siding (called "rustic" on the King County Property Record Card). A composition siding material (manufactured to imitate brick veneer) was installed after 1937. Asbestos siding was installed in 1959. The cladding has been returned to something resembling its original appearance, although the detailing at the window and door openings has been altered. Shutters have been added to several of the windows and wood lattice elements have been added at the remaining portion of the front porch. A metal roof has been installed over the porch.
