Significance |
|
Although altered, this building has retained many elements of its original exterior, including the stucco cladding and trim and the general placement of openings on its facade. The elevated portion of the façade originally only occurred at the center of the façade, making the entire façade more symmetrical. Apparently, the lower southern wing was remodeled and brought up to two stories. There was also a signage tower set perpendicular to the original central portion of the façade. Based on the King County Tax Assessor’s Record card, this building was initially built in 1934 for the Master Oil Burner Company. In 1946, Industrial Plating Works bought the building. It was then remodeled in 1949. In 1951, Industrial Plating Works also constructed the building to the north, which imitated the horizontal trim of this building. Based on local directories, by 1974, Hertz Equipment Rentals and Air Mac Rentals, which specialized in construction and “material handling” machinery occupied the building. More recently, this building has been associated with Stella Coffee.

Appearance |
This building is located on the east side of 4th Avenue South between Spokane Street and Diagonal Avenue South. The building, which includes one and two stories, is distinguished by its façade, which has a stucco exterior, including horizontal bands of trim below its parapet. The north portion of the building along 4th Avenue South appears as a lower stucco clad block, which is followed by what appears to be taller two-story wing, which includes a doorway and two levels of multi-pane windows. In fact, the 4th Avenue South façade acts as a false front to a longer two-story heavy timber building, which has a low-pitched gable roof. |
