Historic Name: Bloch Steel Industries Common Name: Bloch Steel Industries
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Duwamish
Built By: Year Built: 1930

Significance
Plat: Industrial Add, Block: 3, Lot: Portion

This vernacular building dates from 1930. It dates from somewhat later than some examples of vernacular heavy timber buildings in the Industrial District. It is notable for its shape and original workmanship, but has few other outstanding architectural characteristics. On the other hand, it appears to have changed little since it was built. It has long been part of M. Bloch & Company, now best known for Bloch Steel Industries, its major subsidiary. M. Bloch apparently bought the shed in 1938, so the building predates its ownership by Bloch Steel Industries. Bloch Steel Industries specializes in the processing of scrap iron and is a steel distribution center. According to its website, it has been serving the Pacific Northwest and Alaska since 1935. The larger company also deals with other types of recycling and machining.

Appearance

This building is located on the east side of Colorado Avenue South, north of Alaska Street. It is part of a larger property, occupied by M. Bloch and Company, located along Colorado Avenue South between Denver Avenue South and Alaska Street, with an eastern boundary along Utah Street. The building has a rectangular plan, approximately 36 feet by 85 feet. It is a simple heavy timber shed building, which is topped by a very narrow monitor roof. Outside of the monitor windows, which are closed off, the building has few visible openings. There is a laterally sliding door on the main elevation facing Colorado Avenue South. Original shiplap siding and remains of original corner boards are also distinguishing characteristics of the building.
