Significance

This six unit apartment flat in the Squire Park neighborhood, between First Hill and the Central Area, was constructed in c. 1901. The Squire Park area developed between 1890 and 1910 as a residential neighborhood with single family homes and scattered apartment buildings. The nearby Yesler Way cable car line to Lake Washington opened in 1888 and transit lines and related commercial and residential development continued to expand,  as Seattle experienced a major population growth following the 1898 Alaska Gold Rush and into the first decades of the 20th Century.

 
Appearance

This two story masonry construction apartment building has a daylight basement, hipped roof and is rectangular in plan. Cladding is brick at the two levels above the water table and stucco cladding below the water table at the daylight basement level. The primary south elevation is symmetrically arranged in three bays featuring a two-story projecting hip roofed porch in the central bay.  An exterior metal stairwell on the west side of the porch provides access to the second story and entry doors for the 4 units on the upper two floors. Entries to the two lower level units are at the lower level porch at grade with the street level. The two outer bays of the primary façade, south elevation feature large metal sash sliding windows at each of the three levels to light each of the six apartments. Windows are varied metal sash, including sliding sashes, double hung, and fixed sashes. Windows at the basement level are covered by metal security bars.
