Significance

This office building was constructed in 1971 for Pryde Corporation Real Estate (Polk 1971).  The 1975 Seattle City Directory lists the building as the Altera Building, offices, and in 1979 the building was called the Mariner Office Building (Polk 1975, 1979).  The building housed numerous office tenants in the 1970s and 1980s, including Ronald Hoss Public Relations and Advertising (Seattle Times, 1972), Career Academy of Milwaukie, WS, Regional Administrative Center (Seattle Times Classified Advertisements, 1973-79), Universal Trade Corporation, (Seattle Times Classified Advertisements, 1974), Huntoon Paige Associates, LTD., federal mortgage bankers (Seattle Times, 1978), Investment Associates, Inc. (Seattle Times Classified Advertisements, 1979) and  D. Properties (Seattle Times Classified Advertisements, 1984).  The building is currently called the Stewart-John Building.

Appearance

This two-story commercial building is rectangular in plan, measuring 35-feet by 91-feet and divided into 13 small offices off a double-loaded corridor on the ground floor and 16 small offices off a double-located corridor on the second floor. The main entry is in the center of the south facing facade. The building is clad in painted brick with a wide, slightly overhanging horizontally clad parapet band at the roofline. Tall, narrow window bays on all facades are accentuated by double-height brick-clad piers dividing the rectangular, aluminum frame windows with wide horizontal spandrels between the two floors.  The building is set back slightly from the sidewalk.  A planted strip at the building perimeter features mature shrubs and small trees.  A small surface parking lot is located on the irregular, east side of the site and on street parking is afforded along the north and south sides.
