Significance

This Queen Anne style single family residence is in the Uptown neighborhood.

Appearance

Constructed ca. 1901, the one-and-a-half-story building stands on a sloped lot at the southwest corner of the intersection of Ward Street and Taylor Avenue N and faces east. The site slopes steeply downward from north to south, and slightly downward from west to east. Trees abut the house along the north, east, and south sides with an open lot to the rear (west).

A cross gable front roof with parallel front gables is clad with asphalt composition shingles. The roof features modest, enclosed eave and gable overhangs. Eave returns occur at the gable ends. An interior brick chimney located at the west end of the house services the building. The house has a rectangular plan.

A concrete foundation supports the platform frame building. V-groove shiplap siding clads the building with narrow corner boards. A prominent fascia board runs along the top edge of the walls and gable end just below the enclosed soffit. A projecting water table runs along the base of the walls above the concrete foundation. A bay window projects on the north side of the house, with an asphalt composition shingle clad hip roof.

Wood sash, 1:1 windows provide day lighting. These occur in single and paired double hung units, all with wood casings and sills. On the front facade at the first story, there is a window with a large lower lite, a narrow upper lite, and diagonal muntins that form a pattern of diamond- and triangular-shaped lites. The upper sash features stile extensions to reinforce the meeting rail joint.

Entrances consist of a recessed front stoop with arched openings and a front gable roof. The gable end features decorative rake moldings and a central stylized sun figure. A solid wall extends along the north side of the front stoop. A projecting stoop on the south side of the building provides secondary access with a direct flight of stairs leading up to a small landing.

Alterations include enclosure of the southwest corner porch and the addition of an upper balcony; these are clad in vertical boards and plywood. Shutters that flank the window openings have been added. The round dormer that originally projected off the south roof slope has been removed.
