Significance

This 1.5-story single-family residential building (now used as a duplex) was constructed in 1899, according to a 1937 King County Assessor property card, in the Uptown neighborhood.

 
Appearance

Constructed in 1899 as a single-family residence, this wood frame dwelling is located midblock on the north side of W Republican Street just south of Fourth Avenue W. The building is set above street level on a hill. The building is rectangular and its current foundation is unknown. The King County Assessor property card from 1937 indicates the original foundation as post and beam. The building has a side gable roof clad in asphalt composition shingles. The building is clad in asbestos shingles. The building features a turret at its southwest corner with a conical roof. A brick chimney projects from the roof. A partially enclosed is porch is present at the south end of its east elevation. Stairs have been added on the west elevation up to the upper story. A shed dormer projects from the south slope of the roof. The house originally featured predominately 1:1 wood sash; it now features metal windows.

The house retains its original form, but its originally cladding has been removed or obscured and its original windows have been replaced with metal units.
