This is a good and largely intact example of a neighborhood commercial building from the 1920s. Buildings of this type were constructed throughout the city to provide goods and services within a convenient walk from every household. This one is notable for its high degree of integrity and for its key location at First Avenue North and Denny Way, the gateway to Queen Anne. It has had a large number of tenants over the years, including a dairy store, Best Pie Company and the Midway Tavern (1938); a furniture store, a health food store, the Midway Tavern and Best Pie Company (1948); a business machines shop and the Tic Toc Tavern (1960); H&R Block Taxes, a smoke shop & grill, and Mason’s Electrical (1970). The current tenants (Morfey's Cake Shoppe, Champion Wine Cellar and Hunter's Antiques) have been there many years.   Appearance The building is L-shaped, with a prominent corner entry and storefronts on both Denny Way and 1st Avenue North. The upper wall has decorative brickwork and three arched parapets with tile ornament and decorative brackets, one at the corner and one on each side elevation. The bulkheads are largely intact, with brown and green ceramic tile trim. Store entries are recessed with large display windows; the transoms appear intact, although some are covered. The storefronts on Denny Way are intact, while the two on First Avenue North have had minor changes to the windows; the corner storefront has oak doors. The rear of the building is intact, with clapboard cladding, original wood sash and three garage doors.
