Significance |
|
Although it can be established that a building permit was issued for this house in 1914, it is not possible to determine the names of the designer, builder, or original owner from city records since the permit itself is missing. The house appears to be intact and is significant as an example of a typical craftsman bungalow built in the period when the style had reached its greatest popularity. The building is made more interesting by the prominent projecting porch and porch gable which give the design an asian twist.

Appearance |
The house is a shingle clad, frame bungalow built on a concrete foundation over a half basement. Although the axis of the rectangular footprint is perpendicular to the street, the ridge of the main roof is parallel to the street elevation, giving the house a primarily side gable form. The exposed undersides of the overhangs and the triangular knee braces at the two side gables (and the smaller and more recessive of the two front gables) are typical craftsman details. The east facing gable at the projecting entry porch is more prominent than the side gables despite its smaller size. The barge boards at this gable are supported by decorative roof beam "extensions," each of which is situated at the top of a vertical half-timber type trim element. The extension and vertical trim elements give the entry porch gable a distinctive asian feel. At the entry porch, nearly full height brick piers are topped by a built-up wood capital. The heavy turned balusters at the porch rail lend the railing system a neo-colonial look, though the massiveness of the balusters is more typical of the craftsman style. The double hung windows feature a small upper sash with divided lites over a larger undivided lower sash; the proportions of the sash styles and rails appear somewhat heavy. A large planter that was originally part of the porch railing appears to have been removed; otherwise, no significant modifications are apparent. |
