Significance |
|
This American Foursquare structure was built by F.H. Richter in 1906. This is a relatively early example of an American Foursquare building in the University Heights area of the University District. It is more elaborately detailed than most early American Foursquare examples in the University District but far less ornate that some of the later buildings, particularly those found on Capitol Hill. It includes several interesting details, including the projecting second story balcony and the curvilinear bay window on the east elevation. It appears to be quite intact.
It is similar to the Fred L Fehren pattern book design #172. The use of the three columns with the curved bay window between two of the columns and the recessed porch filling the remaining space is a distinctive variation often employed by Fehren.

Appearance |
This is a good example of the American Foursquare design that is almost completely intact. It is a wood-frame building with clapboard cladding, a hipped roof, corner boxed bay windows at the upstairs bedrooms, and a central hipped dormer at the attic. It features a projecting central second-floor balcony, and three square columns with a curved bay window between two of the columns, and a recessed porch between two columns. The house has a projecting three-sided bay window and an exterior chimney on the south elevation. It has double-hung windows, with leaded glass in the upper sash, primarily on the east (main) elevation. The front door is new and the sidelight windows have been replaced. There are some new windows at the basement level. There is a small porch on the north elevation that appears to be original.
The house has been converted to a multiplex, although the exterior is relatively unchanged. The building is in a deteriorated condition and needs paint and a new roof. |
