Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
The Mitchell House was built ca 1910. Prior to 1906, since the only way to travel north of Green Lake was by horses, horse drawn vehicles, or by walking, the population was sparse in this rural part of King County. Within a short time construction of the Everett Interurban through northwestern King County opened this area up for development. In 1910, two years after its tracks were laid, land developer Puget Land Company created a subdivision called the Greenwood Avenue Addition on some vacant land along the Interurban route. In February 1912, the property in this development was deeded to Frank Mitchell (b. ca 1889). He probably purchased the house on contract before that date, because the 1910 Seattle Polk Directory lists Frank M. Mitchell living at “3d av NW nr W 95th.” Mitchell, a building plasterer, had just gotten married in 1909 and so the house was probably built for the newlyweds. In 1914, Frank’s wife Winnie (b. ca 1889) clerked for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. The Mitchells owned the property for at least 10 years. Later occupants and owners. In 1927, Widow Anna L. Huff purchased the house and resided there through the 1930s. In 1945, leather worker Jerry J. and Bernice Colello purchased the residence. In 1961 Alfred T. and Asbjorg Torjussen purchased the house and moved in. Alfred worked as a laborer for Isaacson Iron Works. Variant addresses. The house has had a number of addresses. In 1926 the address was 9356 3rd Ave NW. In the 1928 to 1939 Seattle Polk Directories listed the house at 9414 3rd Ave NW. The 1930 Sanborn map lists the building at both 9414 3rd Ave NW and 9552 3rd Ave NW. The residence apears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure in this portion of Seattle (over 90 years old) and minimal alterations.
