Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.
This is a well-preserved historic property that appears to possess architectural and/or historic significance. This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project.
This property is associated with an era of residential and commercial building between 1916 and 1942 which continued in Georgetown despite an acceleration of the trends toward the industrialization of the area. Significant changes came with prohibition and the closure of the brewery in 1916, the completion of the Duwamish Waterway in 1917, and the arrival of new businesses, such as the Boeing Airplane Company in 1916. In spite of the increasingly industrial nature of the area which had been zoned as such in 1923, residents of Georgetown continued to build new homes and businesses and to plan for a future in the neighborhood. This house was owner built by Clarence W. Sibley, a carpenter/developer who resided nearby at 6639 (now numbered 6649) Ellis Avenue South, a house he built for himself the same year. Sibley also built three additional houses at 6633, 6637, and 6653 Ellis Avenue South in 1919. The house may have been subsequently owned by H.C. Johnson.

| Appearance |
| (1997) A partly altered example of a popular early 20th C residential design derived from earlier Queen Anne residential designs and reflecting Craftsman design influences. This particular house type was commonly constructed in the Seattle area and is similar to numerous designs available through architect/builder’s plan books and Aladdin type house catalogs. This residence exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric that reflect popular early 20th C Craftsman design modes: a full two story form with low pitched (front gable) roof form distinguished by wide barge boards, overhanging eaves and kneebraces, exposed rafter ends, an offset projecting entry porch with a prominent gable roof supported by sets of square wooden columns on a low shingled plinth wall, and a square bay window and standard double-hung windows (windows typically include an ornamental prairie pattern sash). The house is clad with the original double shingle treatment (the gable end of the main gable is standard shingle siding and the gable end of the porch is board & batten) and along with the original trim and architectural features emphasized it horizontally. The design is further distinguished by unusual features drawn from the popular early 20th C. Craftsman designs including a Prairie Style entry door. Exterior alterations of note include the addition of Colonial Revival style window shutters, and the removal of original gable end stickwork and a distinctive craftsman style arbor that extended from the porch the remaining length of the front elevation. |
