Style: Art Deco - Streamline Moderne Neighborhood: Ballard Interbay Manufacturing Industrial Center

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
This small building is an intact example of the Art Moderne style executed in brick in a small neighborhood setting. The building retains its distinctive tower and glass block ornament. It was built in 1940 on the site of the first Mike's Chili Parlor, which was constructed in 1930; it has been a tavern and chili parlor since that time. It once served workers from the numerous mills that made Ballard a lumber and shingle capital.

Appearance
This small building is clad in red brick with marching red stucco on the stepped ziggurat-like tower that is the most notable feature, typical of the Art Moderne style. On the tower is a neon sign with the word "Mike's" running vertically; immediately below the tower are the words "Tavern Chili Parlor." A large 7 Up sign caps the tower. The top and sides of the entry curve inward, with curving glass block sidelights; two large fixed-pane windows flank the entry. There is a simple brick cornice and a brick chimney on the east elevation. At the rear, the building steps down the sloping site, with glazed white brick cladding and several basement windows below street grade.
