Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
This unusual structure was built in 1938 to take advantage of the tourist traffic attracted to the nearby Government locks and its surrounding park. It was originally built by Jimmy John, a Native American artist, as a shop to sell Native American artifacts. The building is said to be a replica of a "haiat" or resting place. John carved the totem pole that stands in front of the building and the corner poles. It has been a fish and chips shop since World War II.

Appearance
This small front-gabled building is clad with board-and-batten cedar planks, with split logs jutting out on the main façade as extended rafters. Six large corner posts are tall cedar logs, carved with Native American images. Similar images are painted on the building. A large totem pole stands in front of the structure. Fenestration is large fixed-pane and double-hung windows on the front and east elevations, with smaller windows on the other sides. Wood and glass entry doors are on the front and east elevations. A wood deck for outdoor eating extends into the parking lot on the east side. A large sign saying "Seafood and Chowder House" is mounted along the ridge of the shake-clad gable roof. At the rear is a small addition with horizontal board siding.
