Significance |
|
This building is notable for its sleek Art Moderne design and the way in which it enhances this prominent corner on 15th Avenue NW. It was built as a grocery store in 1941, near the end of the corner grocery era. After World War II, supermarkets with parking lots replaced the smaller stores. The Art Moderne style was unusual for such stores, giving it a more up-to-date look than other groceries of the time. In the 1940s it was known as the Daily Food Store, run by Marcus Daly; it later became Billie's Grocery. It has had a variety of other retail uses since the 1970s and has been an antique store for some years.

Appearance |
The most distinctive feature of this brick masonry building is its 1-1/2 story Art Moderne corner entry tower, clad in stucco, with rounded edges. The double doors of wood and glass are flanked by curved panels of glass block. The storefront on both main elevations is covered with a suspended canopy, which has been added. The large display windows have newer metal sash, without the original transoms, and stucco bulkheads. |
