Historic Name: Safeway Common Name: Ballard Camera
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Crown Hill/Ballard
Built By: Year Built: 1926

Significance
Although white paint now obscures its ornamentation, this is one of the most ornate and intact small commercial buildings in the Market Street business district. It was built in 1926, a period of significant growth in Ballard as in other Seattle neighbors. It was during this period that Market Street was extended to connect more efficiently with communities to the east and west. Department stores, a large Eagles hall and numerous smaller buildings appeared on Market, which soon overtook historic Ballard Avenue as the commercial center of the community. In the 1950s-60s most of these 1920s buildings were significantly altered; this is one of the most intact. It was a grocery store for many years, including a Safeway in the 1930s. Ballard Camera has occupied the site for more than twenty years.

Appearance
This brick-clad building has extensive ornament (either terra cotta or cast stone) which showed to advantage when the brick was red. Now that the building has been painted white, it is difficult to see the detailing. The shallow gabled parapet has ten floral motif plaques covering most of the area above the transoms. Three brick pilasters, covered with terra cotta, pierce the cornice. The storefront has a newer steel-and-glass door and display windows.
