Sandberg (bldr) Year Built: 1926   Significance In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance. This commercial/apartment building anchors the corner of Beacon Avenue South and South Hanford Street. It is one of several commercial buildings developed by Frederick Anhalt early in his career, when he was a partner with Jerome Hardcastle in the Western Building & Leasing Company. At this time, the company still used outside architects and contractors. Later, Anhalt's own company performed these functions. The architect, William Whiteley, designed many apartment buildings throughout the city, both for this company and for other developers. The relatively unusual configuration, with apartments in the rear, illustrates Anhalt's interest in seeking out new approaches to building apartments. The building's multicolor brick cladding and cast stone ornament give it more elegance than most neighborhood commercial buildings.   Appearance This Art Deco inspired brick commercial building is clad in wirecut brick in a variety of shades of buff, brown and tan. The parapet on the two street frontages is ornamented with cast concrete scrolls and tile-like ornament below the eaves. The original store entries and display windows are largely intact, including the divided-light transoms. The windows of the northernmost store (the pub) are boarded over; the southern most windows have been replaced with aluminum sash, but the wood surrounds remain. The stepped parapet is capped with metal. The south elevation has a large diamond pattern in the brick. One of the two apartment entries has an arched door and a tile-clad shed roof supported by large decorative brackets. Just to the west is a brick chimney and a below-grade basement door. The rear (west) elevation has entries to several other apartments; it is clad in large wood shingles with double-hung sash. Windows have wood double-hung sash.
