Summary for 3309 E Union ST E / Parcel ID 7152200340 / Inv # CA003

Historic Name: Joe's Madrona Food Center Common Name: Madrona Homestyle Market
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Madrona
Built By: Year Built: 1929

Significance
This is a typical example of a 1920s neighborhood commercial building with a considerable amount of architectural integrity. It is distinguished by its ornamentation of Batchelder tiles along the entire upper portion of the storefront. The store opened in 1929, and has been a neighborhood grocery store ever since. It is one of relatively few such stores remaining in Seattle neighborhoods, and is an important part of the small Madrona commercial district.

Appearance
This is a one-story brick-clad building with a single storefront. Its distinguishing feature is the Batchelder tiles set into the brickwork above the display windows. These include four large dogwood-patterned tiles surrounded by twelve smaller tiles. The storefront has been updated, with a newer steel and glass door and a bulkhead with horizontal wood siding; the display windows are older but not original.
