Summary for 5522 12th AVE / Parcel ID 3589500010 / Inv # UD039

Historic Name: Honey, J. R., House Common Name:
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: University
Built By: Year Built: 1908

Significance
This substantial vernacular house seems older than the estimated construction date of 1908. It resembles a farmhouse and appears to have originally been sited on a larger lot. It may have been the first house built on this block. It represents an unusual combination of the American Foursquare plan with a basic vernacular farmhouse. Its proportions are somewhat gawky. J.R. Honey and his family lived in the house from 1907 until about 1913. J.R. Honey built the garage in 1911. The house was owned by Fred E. Smith in 1937.

Appearance
This two story wood-frame vernacular house has a hipped roof with gabled dormers. The house is clad in clapboard, and has an interesting pattern of circular wood shingles in the gable ends of the dormers. The house has a full-length porch on the west elevation and a small porch on the south elevation. The main porch seems oddly proportioned in relationship to the overall mass of the structure. There is a bay window on the south side of the west elevation, that has a somewhat awkward relationship to the porch. The house has double hung windows that are probably not original. The house has a decorative belt course below the cornice and below the cornice on the porch. There is a three-sided projecting bay on the first floor of the east elevation. The porch railings have been changed. The garage was built in 1913.
