Summary for 1417-1425 31st AVE / Parcel ID 6909200495 / Inv # CA013

Historic Name: Mount Baker Pharmacy Common Name: That's Amore
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Mount Baker
Built By: Year Built: 1926

Significance
This 1920s brick commercial building is in the small Mount Baker Ridge commercial district, where few such buildings remain. It served neighborhood needs with a long-time drugstore and soda fountain ( Mount Baker Pharmacy) and a grocery store (Whittendale's). It also supplied other services and goods over the years, including Park Dye Works, a beauty shop, a barber, a dry cleaner and a hardware store. It currently houses an Italian restaurant and a construction company. Although there have been some alterations, it retains much of its original character.

Appearance
This red brick building has four storefronts, with a stepped parapet above each one. Decorative buff colored brickwork contrasts with the dark red brick on the parapet and pilasters and at the corners. Each storefront has a recessed entry with large display windows and transoms; the transoms appear to be replacements, but are similar to the original. Most of the bulkheads are original, with a patchwork of buff and red brick and tile entryway floors. The northernmost storefront has been updated, with a new tile bulkhead and entryway. The building is on a steep slope, with a large two-story rear section. This appears to be largely original, perhaps used as storage space. It has now been converted to aprtemnts. This section has newer metal sash windows and aluminum siding replacing the original lap siding.
