Historic Name: Groce, William house Common Name: Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area Built By: Year Built: 1885   Significance In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local). This house is important for its associations with William Groce, pioneer African American and community leader during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was his home from ca. 1890 until his death. This house is also important because it enhances our knowledge of residential development in Seattle and the history of the African American community. The 1904-1905 Sanborn Map seems to confirm that this house was one of the earliest built in this area. It was located on a large parcel and faced the north; a direction that made sense geographically but that bore no relationship to the streets existing in 1904. At some point prior to about 1910, the house was moved to face the east and 24th Avenue. (This area is not mapped on the 1893 Sanborn).   Appearance Although altered, this vernacular house retains its basic form. It is a simple two story gable front form with a full height gable projection to the north. The original full-width Victorian porch has been removed and a Tudoresque stoop now serves the front entrance. The house is set high above 24th Avenue and shares a common stair with 1735 24th Avenue; another Groce family house.
