In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local). This two-story building is small for the neighborhood and easily overlooked, but is gem-like in its detailing. It was designed in 1925 as a companion to the much larger Biltmore Apartments across the street to the north. The original owner was Stephen Berg, who also owned the Biltmore. It has housed a succession of service and retail businesses such as the Biltmore Market, restaurants, dry cleaners and the current gift store. It is unusual for its design, with a hip roof clad with grey barrel tiles and its terra cotta ornament. The architects were Stuart & Wheatley. Bertram Dudley Stuart (1885-1977) came to Seattle from Canada in 1918 and worked in partnership with Arthur Wheatley from 1925 to 1930. During this period they were responsible for several notable buildings, including the Exeter House, the Bergonian (Mayflower) Hotel and the Marlborough Apartments. Stuart later practiced with Robert Durham, from 1941 to 1977.   Appearance This two-story red brick corner building has a hipped roof clad in grey barrel tile with copper gutters and drains. At the corner and each end are stepped parapets with inset terra cotta tiles. The main storefront is at the corner with a double-leafed arched door. Above this entrance is an large (approximately 2' x 4') grouping of terra cotta tiles in geometric designs. The storefronts are intact with wood and glass doors, 10-light transoms and wood display sash and bulkhead. The second floor apartment windows are six-over-one or eight-over-one sash with terra cotta sills. At the rear of the building is a one-story garage with original metal industrial sash and a terra cotta belt course and coping.
