Historic Name: Prospect Market Common Name: Capitol Chiropractic
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1923

Significance
This small intact retail building is typical of the type of structure that grew up along Seattle streetcar lines. The main commercial center on 19th Avenue East developed a few blocks to the south, at Aloha Street, in 1909, two years after the streetcar began running. This structure is one of several that expanded the commercial district in the 1920s. In 1937 this building housed two grocery stores (Prospect Market and Safeway) and a Van de Kamps Bakery. A grocery was found in virtually every such neighborhood retail center, so that people could easily walk to the market or pick up something after getting off the streetcar. After World War II, shoppers gravitated to larger supermarkets with parking lots, leaving these small buildings to specialized retailers and service businesses. It is currently an architect's office and a chiropractic clinic.

Appearance
This corner store is clad with stucco above the windows on the east and south elevations. The pilasters and the remaining cladding are red wirecut brick. The pilasters have decorative brick inserts and sit on concrete plinths that echo the shape of the gabled parapet. The storefronts are largely intact, with wood display windows with transoms and recessed entries. However, the original tile bulkheads have been replaced with wood. The south elevation on East Prospect Street has three more small storefronts past of a long brick wall with three small windows with wood sash. The building has a suspended canopy, although in somewhat deteriorated condition. The 1937 Assessor's photo shows retractable canvas canopys, so this must have been added in the 1940s-50s.
