This Collegiate Gothic style fraternity was designed by Seattle architects Schack, Young & Myers for the Theta Xi fraternity and constructed in 1926. One of the most noteworthy aspects of the building is the interesting use of a diamond pattern of brickwork.
Schack, Young and Myers was a well-known firm of Seattle architects and engineers who designed many commercial buildings in the 1920s. The firm designed several other buildings in the University District including the Eldridge Buick dealership on the corner of NE 45th Street and Roosevelt Way, the Gelb Building on University Way, the Alpha Phi sorority, and the University Baptist Church on 12th Avenue NE. James Hansen Schack and David John Myers were architects, and Arrigo M. Young was an engineer. The firm was founded in 1920, and Myers left the firm in 1929. Most designs by Schack, Young & Myers were in academic eclectic styles.
Based on field work conducted in October 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the University Park neighborhood.

| This two-and-a-half-story brick-clad building shows the influence of the Collegiate Gothic and Tudor Revival styles. The use of diamond patterned brickwork is one of the most interesting features of the building. The curved gable roof is also distinctive. The gable end on the northwest elevation is repeated in a gable above the main entrance and gabled dormers at the third floor level on the west and north elevations. The gabled dormers feature stucco and half-timbering common in Tudor Revival style buildings. The main entry has a notable cast stone surround and a decorative medallion with leaf patterns and possibly the fraternity's symbol, above the doorway.
The original multi-paned casement windows have been replaced by single-paned casements. A pattern simulating multiple panes has been added to the first floor windows only. There is a one-story building porch extension on the south end of the building with a separate entrance, and this appears to be part of the original design. On the second floor level, there is a deck above a porch at the south end of the building. There is a massive exterior chimney on the east elevation. The east elevation also has flat-roofed dormers at the third floor level. |
