[Updated information added January 1, 2010] This is a well-preserved and particularly distinctive double house that dates from an intense historic period of residential development in Fremont. It appears to have been constructed c.1905. However, permit records have not been uncovered for this property. It is located in the replatted Denny & Hoyt’s Addition, one of the earliest platted and developed residential areas in Fremont. Edward Blewett was a wealthy businessman from Fremont, Nebraska who decided to invest in undeveloped land at the northwest corner of Lake Union. On March 20, 1888, Blewett and his wife Carrie purchased the town site for $55,000 under a mortgage held by John P. Hoyt. With the help of their agent, Luther H. Griffith (also of Fremont, Nebraska) and their attorney Edward C. Kilbourne, the Blewetts prepared a plat for the area. This plat, known as Denny & Hoyt's Addition, was approved by King County on May 8, 1888. King County property tax assessment rolls indicate that this land parcel remained unimproved until around 1905. The house is clearly delineated on the 1904-05 Sanborn Insurance Co. map. By 1906, August Lundgren appears to have owned the double-house and was residing in one of the units. The 1910 tax rolls indicate that the house was valued in two parts for a total of $1,740.00. Lundgren was a Swedish immigrant who by 1910 was living near Interlake and Ashworth Avenues in Wallingford and working as a baker for the (Seattle Golf & ??) Country Club. Subsequent owners included C.J. Anderson (1924) and Leo J. Gilroy (1953).

| [Updated information added January 1, 2010] Located mid-block toward the east end of the block with façade oriented to the north. Highly distinctive and well-preserved two-story, wood-frame, double-house (two family dwelling or duplex). Exhibits late Queen Anne stylist features. Hipped roof form with full width projecting hipped roof porch that extends around the west side of the house. Residence measures approx. 24’x 44’ with concrete foundation and partial basement level. Asymmetrical façade with an entry door at the east side of the porch and an entry door at a slightly recessed and stepped back portion of the porch that wraps the west side of the house. Main and porch hipped roof forms are slightly flared with wide solid soffits accentuated by square corner brackets and deep/ornamented soffit moldings. Porch includes distinctive heavy wooden porch posts (with capital trim and scroll brackets) supported on solid wood pier walls. One-story polygonal bay window located at center of façade. Original narrow (or matching) horizontal cedar siding remains in place. Original double-hung wooden windows appear to remain in place. Some modern window units toward rear west elevation. Ornate diamond pattern window at entry west elevation. Original panel entry doors with glazed upper panel appear to remain in place. Original chimneys appear to have been rebuilt. |
