Historic Name: Unknown Common Name: Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Central Area Built By: Year Built: 1900   Significance This house is a good example of late 19th/early 20th century vernacular architecture incorporating housing with a small neighborhood grocery store. It contributes to our knowledge of vernacular architectural and the residential development of Seattle. Further evaluation of this house may yield additional information regarding the rich ethnic history of this historically Japanese/American and Italian/American neighborhood. A neighbor recalls that this was a Japanese-owned neighborhood grocery store and that the owners had to leave it when they were interned. She gave the name as Yamada. Domenic D. Merlino is listed as owner in the 1941 City Directory.   Appearance This is a large two story hipped roof box with storefront at streetlevel and recessed full width porch above. The windows have one over one double hung wooden sashes and frames. The original siding is covered with asbestos shingles. It has a center brick chimney.
