Significance |
|
This is an early commercial building for this northern section of Fremont, built in 1908 in a very simple vernacular style. This was most likely a grocery store when it was built, and into the 1920s. The streetcar line ran on Fremont Avenue and grocery stores grew up every several blocks so people could walk to them conveniently. This is one of the city's relatively few remaining examples of the first phase of corner store development, a small building with a grocery below and living quarters above. The building has been a tavern since 1938. It was initially called the "Little Buckaroo" and now is the Buckaroo. The neon sign of bucking bronco is notable in itself.

Appearance |
This simple vernacular building is clad in wide clapboard with cornerboards. There is a flat roof with a slightly stepped parapet in front. The entry is recessed with wood double doors. The metal display windows with wood surrounds is old, but probably not original, perhaps dating back to the building's early days as a tavern. The transoms are intact but have been painted over. The metal suspended canopy is sin somewhat deteriorated condition. The rear is a small entry to the apartments above on the south elevation; it is sheltered by a simple hood. All windows on the second floor have newer white vinyl sash, one-over-one on the front and sliders on the other elevations. |
