Summary for 7303 Woodlawn AVE / Parcel ID 9528100695 / Inv # GL001

Historic Name: none Common Name: U-Build-It
Style: Art Deco - Streamline Moderne, Vernacular Neighborhood: Green Lake
Built By: Year Built: 1908

Significance
This is an innovative and intact example of a common phenomenon seen on neighborhood arterial streets. In 1938 a commercial building was added to a 1908 vernacular residential structure, a gable-and-wing building. The commercial structure is a distinctive Art Moderne style with a large round window, a stepped parapet and horizontal elements reminiscent of a small-scale 1930s theater. It is unusual for its expression of the Art Moderne and for its architectural integrity. The addition was first used as an office, and later became a beauty shop (1960s) and a civil engineering firm (1970s).

Appearance
This building has two distinct parts. The older residential building has a gable front with a large wing to the north. Most of the windows have been replaced with newer dark aluminum sash. The wing has two small shed-roof dormers. The 1938 commercial structure, clad in stucco, has a flat roof with a stepped parapet. In addition to the large display windows there is a distinctive large round window near the main entry. The main entry is at the corner, flanked by a stepped surround. There is a secondary entry to the west; both have original doors. The side entry, to the apartments, repeats the stepped pattern of the roofline, characteristics of the Art Moderne style. Horizontal bands above the display windows and at the northwest corner emphasize the Streamline feel of the newer building.
