Significance
Jack Alger opened the first Spuds Fish & Chips at Alki in 1935 and followed with a Green Lake branch in 1940. This building was constructed in 1959, and is still in the same use. The restaurant has become a local landmark in the Green Lake area and a popular stop for cyclists, joggers and others enjoying the park. It is one of Seattle's best examples of roadside architecture.
 
Appearance
This small ,simple structure has a v-shaped roof over a wood-frame structure with large windows, characteristic of the building type. The front (west) and north sides have large panes of glass with wide wood muntins. Above the glass, which encloses the customer service area, is horizontal wood siding; similar siding and concrete are found on the rear half of the main section. The roof, clad with corrugated metal, cantilevers far beyond the building, toward the south, jutting upwards and supported by rafters extending to the roof edge. Two support poles for the tall "Spuds" sign piercesthe roof, providing additional support. In the rear is a small shed roof addition with vertical wood siding.
