Summary for 1519 BROADWAY / Parcel ID 6003000505 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Eldridge Tire Company Common Name: Broadway Café
Style: Spanish - Mission Neighborhood: Pike/Pine
Built By: Year Built: 1925

Significance
This is one of the smaller but most unique auto-related structures built in the Pike/Pine neighborhood in the first quarter of the 20th century. It was constructed in 1925 as the Eldridge Tire Company, part of the nearby Eldridge Buick Company. It was later Broadway Tire Service (1938) and Davies Chevrolet Repair (19148). Since 1967 it has been owned by Seattle Central Community College, housing a variety of businesses such as the current restaurant and barber shop. The building and its detailing appear to be largely intact. The original configuration was a sales room on one side and the office on the other, connected by a canopy, with the service area at the rear.

Appearance
This unique structure has two small rooms joined by a gabled canopy over the drive that leads to the parking area. The two sections are slightly irregular in shape, each with a large arched window angled away from the street and a large rectangular window facing the street. The bulkheads are black ceramic tile with a band of turquoise tile. Pilasters between the windows pierce the cornice line, emphasizing the shape of the bays. The building is of reinforced concrete clad with stucco. Early photos appear to indicate that the gabled roof may have been clad with red tile which would be in keeping with the stucco and the arches; the roof is now composition shingle.
