Significance
This small building sits in a key location at the gateway to Capitol Hill's auto row. It was built in 1915 in the early days of the automobile era and may have originally been a service garage. Historically, it has had several auto-related and light industrial uses. In the 1930s it housed the Keystone Welding Company and E. R. Thornton Auto Equipment. The storefronts are notably intact.
 
Appearance
This one-story brick masonry building has a stepped parapet with metal coping. The word "Melrose Building," flanked by wreath medallions, are over the center of the main (north) façade. The brick is painted white. The three storefronts are intact, with wood display windows, large multipaned transoms, double-leaf wood and glass doors and brick bulkheads. The pilasters have ornamental capitols of corbelled brick at transom level. The south (rear) elevation, where the garage entrance is located, is clad with stucco.
