Summary for 1535 BELLEVUE AVE / Parcel ID 872560-0305 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Timken Roller Bearing Co. Common Name: Mud Bay
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Pike/Pine
Built By: Year Built: 1916

Significance
According to the Tax Assessor's records, this building, constructed in 1916, was used as an apartment building in 1937, with businesses on the first floor. It housed two very diverse businesses: the Storer Company, a greeting card manufacturer and retail shop; and a sales and service office for the Timken Roller Bearing Company. Other first floor tenants over the years have included a variety of retail stores, restaurants and an art gallery. It appears to be one of the few large buildings in the vicinity that has not had significant involvement with the auto industry. The building originally had a substantial cornice with modillions and decorative brackets, which gave the building an Italianate appearance. These have been removed, perhaps after the 1949 earthquake.

Appearance
This three-story red brick building is distinguished by its intact windows and terra cotta detailing. The second and third floors have tripartite windows with eight-over-one sash flanked by four-over-one double-hung sash, all with terra cotta sills. The six storefronts have large wood-framed windows with multipaned transoms. Pilasters clad with large terra cotta tiles and ornament separate the storefronts, which have recessed entries and wood-and-glass doors. The apartment entry on the east elevation has a terra cotta surround and a small metal suspended canopy. Brick pilasters project along the cornice line, above a concrete band that indicates where the original bracketed cornice was removed.
