This is an early mixed use building in one of Queen Anne's smaller neighborhood business districts (1955-1959 6th Ave W and 603 W Crocket St). Numerous small businesses developed on 6th Avenue West where the West Queen Anne trolley line ran. The line opened in 1905, going up the Counterbalance (Queen Anne Avenue) to Lee Street and west to Sixth Avenue West to its terminus at West McGraw Street. Built in 1913, this is one of the oldest larger commercial buildings in the area. For most of its existence it housed a grocery store and drug store, basic components of neighborhood commercial districts.

Appearance |
This two-story brick building has a high degree of physical integrity. Particularly notable are the broad eaves with pairs of decorative brackets. The corner storefront has its original tile bulkhead and transoms with wood-framed display windows, which have metal mullions with decorative plinths. The other storefront is similar, with a wood bulkhead. Another storefront on the north elevation, 603 West Crockett Street is also largely intact, with display windows and transom, a wood bulkhead and a newer wood-and-glass door. The entry to the apartments, on the primary elevation, has its original wood-and glass door with newer sidelights. Second floor windows are newer one-over-one double-hung black aluminum sash, which are relatively inconspicuous. |
