Historic Name: Kelly Pharmacy Common Name: Salute Style: Spanish - Mission Neighborhood: Ravenna Built By: Year Built: 1931   Significance This is typical of the small commercial buildings built along major streets during the 1920s-30s. It is distinguished by its Mission Revival characteristics, with a barrel tile roof and arched parapet. As with most such buildings, it housed a variety of businesses providing basic goods and services to the neighborhood. In the 1930s there were two grocery stores, a bakery, a barber and a hardware store. In the 1950s there was the Kelly Pharmacy, Fox Cleaners, a barber and an upholsterer. It currently has a popular Italian restaurant.   Appearance This rectangular stucco-clad building shows elements of the Mission Revival style with a green tile roof with an arched parapet in the center of the main (south) elevation. The east and west elevations each have a parapet extending about one-third of the way back from the front of the building; the transoms here remain and it appears that there were once display windows on the sides. The parapet arch has a large shield medallion with a mosaic "H" in the center; this is flanked by smaller medallions. The two finials are now gone, perhaps lost in an earthquake or removed for safety. The storefronts are largely intact, although the transoms and the tile bulkheads (originally black and white) have been painted over. They have recessed entries and metal sash. The entire front of the building is covered by a fabric canopy, replacing the original suspended canopy. The rear (north) elevation is stucco clad with three nine-light rear doors and several original 15-light windows.
