Significance |
|
This building is a good example of adaptation over time to the changing character of a street and neighborhood. Built in 1909, the large Craftsman house was later remodeled to accommodate businesses on the first floor. This change occurred in 1924, and reflected the increasing importance of this intersection and the commercial district surrounding it. Nearby Roosevelt High School opened in 1922, followed by significant growth in both commercial and residential districts. NE 65th was also the main route to the growing Green Lake neighborhood to the west. The house was evidently simply raised to build the commercial addition underneath, leaving the house intact. It is largely unchanged from the 1924 alterations.
As might be expected, the structure has housed a wide variety of small neighbor businesses over the years, including cafes, barbers, jewelers, dry cleaners, cobblers and, for many years, a sporting goods store. In the late 1930s a postal substation was one of the tenants.
