The Malloy family constructed the prominent Malloy apartment building in 1928. The apartment building occupies a key location on 15th Ave NE across from the University of Washington campus and just south of 45th Street. It is representative of the Collegiate Gothic style of architecture that was popularly used around the University District in the twenties. The apartments ranged from one to four room suites; each contained Murphy beds and bathes with shower attachments. A roof garden provided views of Lake Union and the University of Washington campus; the garden included a horseshoe court and putting green. Angus P. Malloy came to Seattle from Florida for the Alaska-Pacific-Yukon Exposition in 1909 and became a prominent local businessman. The Malloy family owned three apartments in the University District, this building, the Adelaide Malloy and the Malloy Manor (originally Washington Manor). Architect Earl Roberts designed several apartment buildings in the University District including the Washington Manor, Smart, Commodore, and Duchess apartments. Roberts designed many apartments and commercial buildings throughout Seattle during the 1920s. His offices were located in the Burke Building in downtown Seattle.   Appearance The Malloy Apartments is an eight-story Collegiate Gothic style structure of irregular U-shaped footprint. The main entrance is recessed, creating a courtyard with cast stone benches. The first floor is clad in cast stone, while the upper floors are clad in brick. The windows are the single double-hung variety placed regularly. The cornice is decorated with cast stone detailing, and similar ornamentation surrounds the eighth-story windows. The building has an oversized parapet with cast stone ornamentation. All windows have been replaced with metal-framed double-hung windows.
