Summary for 4679 1st AVE / Parcel ID 7834800010 / Inv # WA009

Historic Name: none Common Name: Wallingford Apartments
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1909

Significance
This is one of relatively few remaining examples of the corner grocery stores that developed in residential areas all over Seattle in the first quarter of the 20th century. This vernacular building may have been built either as a large single family home or as a small apartment building. Only fifteen years after its construction, in 1926, the first floor was converted to a grocery store, clad with brick. It housed a grocery store and meat market for decades, and now has a laundry and a small accounting firm.

Appearance
This is a hipped roof Classic Box house, common to many Seattle communities. It has three hipped dormers and square bay windows at the corners. The storefronts look much as in the 1937 Tax Assessor photo, with brick cladding, and wood-and-glass doors. However, one section has been replaced with large plate glass windows and a new door, and another has newer sash. Some of the original sash on the second floor remains, notably the eight-over-one sash in the bays; several other windows have newer sash. Cladding on the second floor is asbestos siding.
