Historic Name: Home Grocery Common Name: Mari-Don Healthway Foods
Style: Art Deco Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1930

Significance
This is one of Wallingford's few Art Deco buildings, with distinctively detailed pilasters and storefront. It was built at the end of the 1920s era of rapid commercial development, and reflects the more modern styles of the 1930s. Forty-fifth Street connected the University District with the communities of Wallingford, Green Lake and Greenwood to the west. It became a major commercial center for North Seattle during the 1920s, and remains so today. This building was once a grocery store, Home Grocery, followed by a variety of other small businesses. It is currently a health food store.

Appearance
This small-stucco clad building features Art Deco pilasters with stepped bases, fluted sides and, at the top, medallions with stylized floral cascades. The spandrels between pilasters are filled with geometric patterns of fluting in the center flanked by stepped sides. Unfortunately, the upper part of the façade is covered with clapboard, which appears to be easily removable. The storefront has original metal sash and tile bulkheads, but the door has been replaced with a newer steel-and-glass door. The suspended canopy is intact. Small windows on the west elevation have been covered and have air conditioning units in them.
