Historic Name: Common Name: Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Wallingford Built By: Year Built: 1911   Significance This house was built in 1911 according to the King County Property Record Card (1937) and the King County Assessor Property Characteristics Report (accessed in 2005). Christine Carr, in her thesis entitled "The Seattle Houses of Ellsworth Storey: Frames and Patterns," identified this house as one of three structures in the Wallingford neighborhood designed by Ellsworth Storey. Although early photographs indicate that a detached garage has stood at the northeast corner of the property since at least 1937, a trellised porte-cochere attached to the east elevation of the corner porch and extending over the driveway extending along the eastern edge of the site was removed at some point between 1937 and 1954. The garage was rebuilt in 1953 according to the King County Property Record Card. The house appears to have been purchased by O. J. Jensen and his wife in 1927. The house was acquired by Ludwig Thorkildsen in 1952 and later (at an unspecified date) by J. W. Boruck. The current owner, Kenneth L. Ward, appears to have purchased the house from Joel W. Boruck in 1984. Although originally built as a single-family residence, the King County Assessor Property Characteristics Report indicates that the structure has functioned as a triplex in recent years. The date of the conversion is not yet known.   Appearance This house was built as a 1-1/2 story, shingle clad frame single-family residence over a full basement on a concrete foundation. The low slope roof, the wide barge boards supported by triangular knee braces, the bungalow style windows, and the brick piers and railings at the cross gabled corner entry porch are all features associated with craftsman arts & crafts bungalows in the Wallingford neighborhood. The house has been modified to function as a triplex and significantly altered in appearance by the replacement of the original shingle siding, first with composition shakes in 1954 and later with cement asbestos shingles, and by extensive replacement of windows and removal of much of the original wood trim.
