Summary for 4532-4536 California AVE / Parcel ID 0952000010 / Inv # WS007

Historic Name: Teague's Jewelry Common Name: Menashe Jewelry/Margaret's Apparel
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: West Seattle Junction
Built By: V. W. Voorhees (?) Year Built: 1928

Significance
This small commercial building is a very good example of the relatively ornate brick buildings constructed in Seattle neighborhoods, especially West Seattle, in the 1920s. In the 1930s it accommodated a variety of stores and services, including shoe repair, photo developing and a shoe store. Longtime tenants have been Teague's Jewelry, Menashe Jewelry, Margaret's Apparel, a barber, and a shoe repair shop. The building was modernized in 1966-67, covering the entire façade with metal cladding. This has been removed, restoring the upper part of the façade to its original appearance. Given this building's similarity to the J. C. Penney building adjoining to the north, it is possible that this was also designed by Victor W. Voorhees. Voorhees is credited with more than 100 building projects between 1904 and 1929, ranging from cottages and large residences to apartment blocks, auto dealerships, industrial buildings, fraternal halls, office buildings and hotels. He was also known for publishing a popular books of house and bungalow plans in 1907. Voorhees also designed several other buildings in West Seattle.

Appearance
This one-story building is similar to the larger Penney's store to the north, with terra cotta pilasters with a shield design and a wide course of terra cotta above the transoms. The pilasters rise above the cornice line in a stepped fashion, with terra cotta ornament. Cladding is brick in a variety of brown and tan shades. The storefronts have been updated, with newer doors and window sash; the black granite bulkheads remain. The area above the windows, below the fabric canopy, is stucco clad. The large transom windows are the same size as originally, but are now opaque black glass with aluminum frames. The south elevation, mostly hidden, is clad with unglazed red tile.
