Voorhees Year Built: 1920   Significance In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance. This is one the oldest and most intact commercial buildings in the Admiral business district. From the early days of development in West Seattle, California Avenue was the main commercial street, where the streetcar line ran. Important commercial districts grew up here at Admiral Street, close to early residential growth and the ferries, and to the south at Alaska Street. This building was built in 1920 and was initially known as the Lloyd Building. A two-story companion structure (now considerably altered) was built at the corner in 1928. The owner in the 1930s was Aline Hamm, who also owned the Hamm Building, a primary structure in the Alaska Junction district. This building was designed by V. W. Voorhees who designed many of the buildings in the Alaska Junction area. Voorhees is credited with more than 100 building projects between 1904 and 1929, ranging from cottages and large residences to apartment blocks, auto dealerships, industrial buildings, fraternal halls, office buildings and commercial structures such as this one. He was also known for publishing a popular book of house and bungalow plans in 1907.   Appearance This one-story building is clad with stucco and terra cotta. A gabled parapet marks each storefront, with terra cotta pilasters with broad flat caps rising about one foot above the cornice. The gables above the storefronts are clad with terra cotta tile, with a floral medallion in each bay. The pilasters, which also have medallions at cornice level, are painted grey to match the building next door. The remainder of the terra cotta is not painted. The storefronts have their original wood sash and wood-and-glass doors. The bulkheads are stucco which replaced the original marble. Fabric canopys have been installed instead of the original suspended metal canopy.
