In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the National Register of Historic Places.
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.

Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.

This is a slightly altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance.

(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner/builder of this building has not been determined. Identified as the Vega Hotel by 1911, it is said to have been built as a roadhouse. Prior to being remodeled during WWII for apartment purposes, the facade included a cut-away porch and commercial space oriented toward Airport Way South. Hardy Street was originally known as Vega Street and after 1910 as Vega Place. This property may pre-date the construction date identified on assessor’s records and is worthy of additional research to determine a more accurate date of construction and original ownership.

Appearance
No substantive change to the building form, extant historic building fabric or features since the 1997 HRI project.

(1997) A partly intact example of early 20th C. commercial architecture that has been altered and is somewhat deteriorated. Exhibits two-part commercial block facade composition with an upper floor level that includes segmental arched windows openings and a prominent corbelled cornice and parapet. The first floor level originally included retail storefront bays and was more clearly differentiated. The current lower level configuration reflects extensive changes made to adapt the building for apartment purposes in 1943 (remodel design by architect Henry Bitman). The original entry, display and mezzanine level window openings have all been altered. All of the upper floor (tall narrow double-hung) window sash appear to have been replaced with vinyl products. The lower floor level was historically used for commercial and storage purposes, and the upper floor level included approximately thirty-six lodging rooms that were later adapted for apartments purposes.
